Gladys steps in as Chemutai exits after a 25-year career at the bank, having expanded the CFO remit across East Africa and the continent.

Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Limited has announced the appointment of Gladys Warirah as chief financial officer and executive director, subject to approval by the Central Bank of Kenya and the Capital Markets Authority. She succeeds Chemutai Murgor, who is set to exit the bank effective 31 May 2026 following her resignation after more than 25 years of service.

Gladys joined Standard Chartered in 2013 as financial controller before moving to Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia in 2023, where she serves as country treasurer. With over 20 years of leadership experience in treasury, finance, controllership and governance, she is credited with delivering the treasury strategy and building a high-performing treasury team.

She is a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) and a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

End of an era

Chemutai Murgor’s departure marks the close of a distinguished chapter at the bank. She joined Standard Chartered in 2000 in a business finance role and rose steadily through the ranks, becoming head of finance in 2004, and then executive director of finance for Kenya in 2007. She later took on additional responsibilities for East Africa in 2011, and most recently served as cluster CFO for Africa from June 2024.

Under her stewardship, the bank achieved significant efficiencies in balance sheet management and sustainable growth. She was instrumental in building a forward-looking finance function by leveraging technology to enhance financial reporting and leading transformational initiatives that supported the bank’s strategic objectives.

Before Standard Chartered, Chemutai trained as a chartered accountant at Deloitte, where she spent over eight years, including time in London and as senior manager in the Nairobi office. She holds a BCom in accounting and finance from the University of Nairobi and an MBA from Warwick Business School.

A seasoned board director with over 18 years of experience across financial services, insurance, international NGOs and education, Chemutai has served on boards including the International Water Management Institute, CGIAR System Management Board, Insurance Regulatory Authority, and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology. She is a member of Women Corporate Directors and a certified executive coach.
