Maryanne Mwai has been appointed as the Africa head of finance at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. With a career spanning 16 years across manufacturing, audit, and business transformation in Sub-Saharan Africa, Maryanne brings to the role extensive expertise in strategic financial management, business process transformation, risk oversight and compliance.

“My private sector experience, coupled with my academic background, will be invaluable as I transition to the public sector. I look forward to utilising my expertise to support the institute's advisory teams and drive impactful initiatives across Africa,” she said

Over the last five years, Maryanne served as the business integrity manager for Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL), a subsidiary of East African Breweries Limited (EABL). In her previous role, she designed and implemented a strong controls framework and partnered with the business to ensure compliance and consistent implementation of internal controls.

Maryanne cut her teeth in professional services, having begun her career as an auditor at KMPG Kenya in 2008. In 2011, she left the firm for a senior auditor role at Deloitte & Touche East Africa. At Deloitte, she managed field teams, supervised audit work, and reviewed junior staff contributions. She also played a key role in preparing risk-based audit plans, conducting risk assessments for clients and their businesses, and evaluating financial and operational control systems through post-audit reviews.

She ventured into senior leadership in 2014, when she took up the position of head of finance at Oxford University Press. The role saw her serve as finance business partner for the general manager and leadership team while providing overall leadership and direction to the finance function.

Before joining EABL, she served as financial controller for Sub-Saharan Africa at American food manufacturer Mars Wrigley's Corporation.
