Stephen Byaruhanga appointed FD of Berkeley Energy Uganda

Berkeley Energy Uganda has announced the appointment of Stephen Byaruhanga as its new finance director, effective September 2024. With over 20 years of experience in financial management, Stephen brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role, where he will oversee the financial strategy for Berkeley Energy Uganda’s portfolio of eight renewable energy projects across the country.

Berkeley Energy, founded in 2007, has deep renewable energy and power engineering, construction, and investment experience in developing markets, where it is a focused investor, developer and delivers renewable power assets.

Stephen began his career at Eskom Uganda, where he spent over two decades, progressing through various roles. He joined Eskom as finance manager in 2008, a role in which he provided financial input into the company’s five-year strategic plan. He also supervised the preparation of monthly and quarterly reports, managed cash flows, and spearheaded the automation of payment systems, linking Eskom’s financial software to Citibank’s online banking platform. Stephen’s leadership was instrumental in migrating the company’s financial data from Pastel ERP to Microsoft Dynamics ERP, leading to significant improvements in the company’s financial reporting processes.

In 2013, Stephen transitioned to the role of head of risk management, where he played a pivotal role in designing and implementing Eskom Uganda’s risk management framework. His work in this area ensured the company’s compliance with ISO 31000 standards and solidified its approach to managing operational risks. In January 2016,

Stephen was promoted to director of finance, a position he held until September 2024. In this capacity, he provided strategic financial oversight for Eskom Uganda’s operations, driving sustainable growth and ensuring that the company met its multi-stakeholder commitments.

Stephen's academic background further underscores his qualifications for the role. He holds a bachelor of commerce from Makerere University in Kampala, which he earned in 2004. In 2010, he completed his ACCA certification from the UK, further enhancing his professional expertise in accounting and finance.
