He boasts a strong background in financial strategy and organisational leadership spanning multiple African markets.

David Wafula has been appointed as the CFO of Weza Power in Burundi.

In addition to leading the finance function, he will support the company’s operational readiness, governance structures, investment strategy, and early-stage institutional setup.

“I’ve worked in big systems before, but Weza Power is different. This isn’t polishing an existing structure, it’s building the foundation for millions of lives. That’s the kind of work you don’t say no to,” he says.

The move comes as Weza Power prepares to roll out an ambitious electrification programme targeting more than six million people across the country. The private national utility is a partnership between the Government of Burundi and Anzana Electric Group, with investment support from the World Bank, IFC and other development partners.

David's appointment comes as the utility accelerates preparations for operational launch and begins assembling the teams, systems, and processes required to support its initial pilot phase and eventual national rollout.

He is expected to play a central role as the company transitions from a start-up entity into a fully operational national utility responsible for driving long-term impact across Burundi’s energy landscape.

David began his career at PwC in Kenya and Rwanda, where he spent seven years before moving into senior energy-sector leadership roles.

He holds an MSc in Finance from the University of Aberdeen, an MBA from the ALU School of Business, and a BCom from the University of Nairobi. He is also a certified public accountant (CPA-K) and has completed additional studies in sustainable leadership and cross-cultural management.
