He takes over from Dunstan Ayodele Stober, who served as acting CFO since September 2024.
John Bugunya has been appointed CFO of MTN Rwanda.
He boasts over 20 years of experience spanning banking, insurance, manufacturing and professional services across Rwanda and the wider region.
John began his career at EY Uganda in July 2003, spending three years executing audit assignments before moving to Deloitte UK in July 2006 as an audit manager.
He returned to the Rwanda in November 2009 to join Bank of Kigali as CFO, where he led the bank's successful IPO and listing on the Rwanda Stock Exchange in 2011. He then served as CEO of Prime Insurance from December 2014 to April 2017, leading the company's strategy and underwriting operations.
John joined Cimerwa in May 2017 as CFO, later taking on the additional role of executive director from August 2018. During his tenure he drove a financial turnaround at the cement manufacturer and guided its listing on the Rwanda Stock Exchange.
Beyond his executive career, John serves as vice president of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Rwanda. He is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
He holds an MSc in international finance from the University of London, a Master's degree in accounting and finance from Oxford Brookes University, and a Bachelor's degree in accounting and finance from Makerere University
