Lawrence moves into the Kenya CFO role after a decade in Rwanda, where he served as chief accountant and later CFO of Britam's Rwanda business.
Lawrence Gathanji has been appointed chief financial officer of Britam General Insurance in Kenya.
He brings nearly two decades of experience within the Britam group, having risen from assistant accountant to CFO across successive roles in Kenya and Rwanda.
Lawrence joined Britam in January 2006 as an assistant accountant and progressed through the organisation over the following years, holding roles as accountant, management accountant, and financial accountant across its Kenya operations. In August 2015, he relocated to Rwanda, initially taking up the position of chief accountant at Britam Rwanda before being appointed CFO of the Rwanda business in January 2018.
His ten-year Rwanda tenure covered the full scope of the CFO function in a regulated insurance environment, spanning financial reporting, treasury management, budgeting, statutory compliance, and board-level management reporting. He also oversaw human resource and administrative functions for the Rwanda office.
Lawrence holds a BCom from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) and a Master's degree in strategic management from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). He is an ACCA member.
