Heritage Insurance Company Tanzania has announced the appointment of Japhet Valerian to the CFO position, effective June 2024. Unga Group finance and ICT director James Nyutu has taken on the position of acting group managing director, following the departure of Joseph Choge. Veronica Magongo, head of finance at I&M Bank Tanzania, has experienced different organisational cultures during her rich career. In an exciting development for Letshego Faidika Bank (LFB), Benson Msangi has been appointed as its CFO, effective May 2024. Over 60 top Tanzanian finance leaders came together at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dar es Salaam for the much-anticipated launch of the local chapter of the CFO East Africa community. Engaging conversations were held dwelling on the agenda for an active CFO community in the country. The occasion was supported by event Principal Partner PwC. Zainab, the incoming country senior partner effective 1 July 2024, currently serves as the country operations partner, overseeing the firm's financial affairs and spearheading the Learning and Methodology Practice. She spoke to CFO East Africa about the firm's role in assisting CFOs meet their objectives and their support of the community as principal partner. Close to half of CFOs in East Africa stated that demands from investors is the main trend influencing their organisations’ approach to ESG. This statistic is just one of several interesting findings from the CFO East Africa ESG survey, which involved 120 CFOs representing leading companies in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda. Close to 100 CFOs from across East Africa came together at ALN House in Nairobi for the much-anticipated CFO East Africa ESG Summit, where all things sustainability, including the CFO’s role in driving the ESG agenda in organisations, were discussed. In particular, he loves the quote “any strategy, no matter how smart, is dead on arrival unless the company brings it to life with people – the right people”. For Nancy Muhoya cluster leader of EY East Africa and the country managing partner for EY Kenya, success stems from the ability to handle anything that comes her way. Her own experience in a leadership role has taught her that success comes from seeking continuous improvement because comfort at any stage leads to stagnation. After braving the cold weather in the UK, Moses Kang’ethe, CFO of Britam Life Assurance Company, returned to Kenya to play his part in building a better country and have a better quality of life. Over the last 14 years in Rwanda, Wafula David Wanjala, CFO for the African operations of ContourGlobal, has been a witness to the country's remarkable evolution in the accounting landscape. Alkarim Jiwa is the group finance and strategy director at Diamond Trust Bank (DTB). He took time off his busy schedule to chat with CFO East Africa about himself, his role at the bank and his advice for fellow finance professionals. Joseph Nzou Ndisya, who has worked for PwC Kenya for his entire 22-year career, believes it is important to never lose the personal touch with employees no matter how many there are.
